Philadelphia Health Officials Urge Former Dental Patients to Get Tested for Hepatitis and HIV

Health officials in Philadelphia are urging certain former patients of a dental clinic accused of unsafe sanitary practices to get tested for hepatitis and HIV following possible exposure risks between April 2025 and May 2026.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health identified the clinic Wednesday as Smiles at Rittenhouse Square, also known as Smiles on the Square. Officials said the practice has since closed after the dentist’s professional license was temporarily suspended.

James Garrow told ABC News that officials currently believe the risk to patients remains low because no confirmed hepatitis or HIV cases linked to the clinic have been identified so far.

“We don’t have any known reason to say that the risk will potentially be high,” Garrow said. “But the fact of the matter is, when you are in a dentist office that’s unsanitary and unsafe, the risk always exists.”

He added that health officials are strongly encouraging former patients to undergo testing “to make sure.”

State records show the clinic’s sole practicing dentist, Kirti Chopra, had her license temporarily suspended earlier this month.

According to a statement from the Pennsylvania Department of State, the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry suspended Chopra’s license on May 15, 2026, determining that her continued practice “presents a clear and immediate danger to public health and safety.”

The alleged sanitary violations were uncovered during an unannounced inspection of the clinic, according to the suspension order reviewed by ABC News.

Investigators said Chopra allegedly acknowledged that injectable medication vials intended for single use were sometimes set aside and reused on other patients. The order also alleged that IV saline bags meant for one-time use were reused between patients.
