Makinde Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition

Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State, has officially declared his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2027 general election.

Makinde made the announcement on Thursday during a unity rally jointly organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All People’s Movement (APM) at Mapo Hall.

The governor said Nigeria needed a new direction and called on opposition parties to unite against what he described as attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to turn the country into a one-party state.

According to him, the nation’s democracy can only thrive where opposition parties are allowed to operate freely without interference.

Makinde also unveiled the “Reset Nigeria Movement” alongside a presidential campaign platform aimed at mobilising support across the country and among Nigerians in the diaspora.

“Nigeria cannot continue with politics as usual. This is the time to reset our nation, rebuild public trust, strengthen institutions, and create a system that works for all Nigerians,” he said.

The governor urged Nigerians not to remain passive observers in the political process, insisting that collective participation would shape the country’s future in 2027.

“Is this the way we are to continue as a nation?” Makinde asked while highlighting concerns over economic hardship, insecurity, and what he described as growing pressure on opposition voices.

The declaration rally attracted party leaders, supporters, youth groups, and political stakeholders, including former Osun State governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Makinde, who was first elected governor in 2019 and re-elected in 2023 under the PDP platform, becomes one of the latest major political figures to formally signal interest in the 2027 presidential race.
