Vice President JD Vance sparked backlash after suggesting that Pope Leo XIV should “be careful” when speaking on theological matters, following the pontiff’s criticism of U.S. airstrikes on Iran.
Vance made the comments Tuesday during an appearance at a Turning Point USA event in Athens, Georgia, weighing in on the pope’s stance on the conflict.
Late-night host Stephen Colbert, a practicing Catholic, responded during his show Wednesday, taking aim at Vance’s remarks and questioning his authority on the subject.
“I know you’re Catholic, but you joined in 2019,” Colbert said. “I’ve been practicing since the 1960s.”
Colbert went on to deliver a satirical critique, suggesting Vance should focus on religious practice rather than challenging the pope’s views, punctuating his commentary with humor rooted in Catholic traditions and rituals.
The exchange highlights growing tensions between political leaders and religious figures over the moral framing of U.S. foreign policy, particularly in relation to the conflict involving Iran.
