The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has described the party’s ongoing crisis as a “generational challenge,” urging opposition forces to unite in defence of Nigeria’s democracy.
Mark made the remarks at the party’s 2026 National Convention in Abuja, where he told delegates that the moment represents both a major opportunity and a heavy responsibility.
“Our objective is not merely political success or a quest for power… but a duty to demonstrate that democracy can deliver a better life for Nigerians,” he said.
He called on opposition leaders across party lines to collaborate, warning that the country faces challenges that transcend partisan interests.
“We view this as a generational challenge… it is a patriotic duty to rescue our country from creeping dictatorship and exploitative governance,” he added.
Mark described the convention as a defining moment for opposition politics, noting that it symbolises the resilience and survival of democratic alternatives in Nigeria.
Reflecting on recent developments, he alleged that the party had faced “fierce and unprecedented betrayal,” citing actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other institutions.
According to him, efforts were made to frustrate the convention through administrative and legal obstacles, including removal of party leadership names from official platforms and denial of access to preferred venues.
“They sought to stop this convention from happening… but we will not bow, we will not cower, and we will not retreat,” he declared.
Mark insisted that the ADC remains committed to strengthening democracy, warning that weakening opposition voices poses a threat to the nation’s political future.
“What is at stake is not just the ADC… it is the very survival of our democracy,” he said.
He maintained that attempts to suppress the party have instead strengthened its resolve and broadened its support base, stressing that a strong opposition is essential for democratic stability.
Reaffirming the party’s direction, Mark said the ADC is focused on putting Nigerians first and rebuilding public trust in governance, expressing confidence that the country can overcome its current challenges through collective effort.
