Onyejeocha Resigns as Minister of Labour and Employment

Nkeiruka Onyejeocha has formally resigned as Nigeria’s Minister of State for Labour and Employment, becoming the third federal appointee to step down following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 vacate their positions.

Onyejeocha announced her resignation on Friday via a letter shared on social media, three days after the March 31 deadline set by the presidency.

In her letter, she expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, members of the Federal Executive Council, ministry staff, and Nigerians for the opportunity to serve, describing her tenure as a privilege. She highlighted collaborative efforts in advancing workers’ rights, improving workplace safety, and expanding employment opportunities.
“This period marks the end of a significant chapter in my journey of service as I formally resign as Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment,” she wrote.

Onyejeocha also thanked her constituents in Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency for their support during her tenure in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2023.
“As one chapter closes, another opens. I remain committed to service, to progress, and to building the Nigeria we all deserve,” she added, without specifying which elective office she plans to contest in 2027.

Her resignation follows similar moves by other cabinet members: Said Alkali, Minister of Transportation, stepped down to pursue the governorship of Gombe State, while Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, resigned to join the Bauchi State governorship race.
