President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Pam Bondi will step down as attorney general and transition to a role in the private sector.
In a statement posted on social media, Trump praised Bondi’s service, saying she would move into “an important new job” to be announced in the near future.
The president named Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s personal attorney, as acting attorney general.
The leadership change follows reports of growing frustration within the administration over the Justice Department’s handling of politically sensitive cases. Sources indicated Trump had recently discussed the possibility of replacing Bondi amid concerns that the department was not aggressively pursuing his political opponents.
In a statement after the announcement, Bondi said she would spend the coming weeks ensuring a smooth transition before taking on her new role. She described her tenure leading the Justice Department as “the honor of a lifetime,” highlighting what she called a historic first year focused on strengthening national security.
The shake-up marks a significant shift in leadership at the Department of Justice, as the administration continues to reshape its legal and enforcement strategy.
