A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address worsening electricity supply and increasing fuel costs across the country.
Speaking in Osogbo, Oyintiloye described the persistent power outages as a major source of hardship for Nigerians and a setback to reforms in the energy sector. He lamented that despite repeated assurances, electricity supply continues to decline, with many households and businesses reportedly receiving less than three hours of power daily, especially amid the current heatwave.
“It is a terrible situation across Nigeria, with persistent and worsening epileptic power supply,” he said, adding that frequent national grid collapses remain a major concern.
He attributed the crisis to gas shortages, weak transmission infrastructure, and years of underinvestment, urging the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to take immediate steps to stabilise the grid.
Oyintiloye also called on the President to set up a panel of inquiry to investigate recurring grid failures and determine whether they stem from structural challenges or possible sabotage. He warned that the situation has already sparked peaceful protests in parts of the country and could escalate if urgent action is not taken.
He further noted that rising fuel prices have compounded the problem, making it more difficult for Nigerians who depend on generators as alternative power sources.
While acknowledging ongoing reforms by the administration, he stressed the need for swift and decisive measures to ease the burden on citizens and restore confidence in the power sector.
