Nigeria, UK Move to Update Migration, Returns Agreement

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have commenced moves to strengthen bilateral cooperation through the update of their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Migration Management and Returns.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this in Abuja during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery.

According to the minister, the revised MoU is designed to enhance efficient, lawful, and humane migration processes, while reinforcing security collaboration and broadening economic opportunities between the two nations. He described migration management as a shared responsibility and a vital component of Nigeria’s strategic security partnership with the UK.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Interior’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Mary Ali, confirmed that both countries are working towards finalising the updated agreement on Migration and Returns.

Tunji-Ojo expressed appreciation for the UK’s sustained support in intelligence sharing, technical assistance, and operational coordination, noting that migration justice cooperation between Nigeria and the UK spans more than two decades.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to modernise its immigration system, enhance passport administration, and promote legitimate mobility, while ensuring national security and protecting economic interests. The minister also underscored the need to strike a balance between effective border control and economic development, including attracting credible investment in line with the Federal Government’s broader reform agenda.

In his remarks, Montgomery commended Nigeria’s clear policy direction and stressed the importance of predictable and efficient systems in achieving shared migration and security objectives. He described the engagement as professional, forward-looking, and solution-driven.
