The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports claiming it has released a timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, describing the information as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday, INEC said no timetable has been approved or circulated for the 2027 polls, urging Nigerians and the media to disregard the reports and rely only on the commission’s official communication channels.
“The Commission wishes to categorically refute reports circulating in some quarters claiming that INEC has released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election,” the statement said. “This information is false and misleading.”
INEC stressed that it operates strictly within the provisions of the law, referencing Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates the commission to publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election. It noted that any timetable issued outside this legal framework could not have originated from the commission.
“Any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from INEC,” the statement added.
The commission reassured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election would be released in due course, in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022.
INEC said that when the timetable is eventually released, it will be communicated through its verified and official channels. The electoral body also warned that the circulation of fake election-related information could cause unnecessary confusion and tension in the country.
The statement was signed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, and dated January 2, 2026.
