Turkish authorities say arrested suspected IS member was planning New Year’s attacks

Turkish authorities said Friday they have detained a suspected member of the extremist Islamic State group who was allegedly planning attacks targeting New Year’s celebrations.

According to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, the suspect, Ibrahim Burtakucin, was apprehended during a joint operation by police and the National Intelligence Agency in the southeastern city of Malatya.

Security officials told Anadolu that Burtakucin was in contact with multiple IS sympathizers both inside Turkey and abroad and was seeking an opportunity to join fighting in active conflict zones. During a search of his residence, authorities said they seized digital materials and banned publications linked to the Islamic State group.

The arrest came a day after the Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office announced that Turkish security forces had carried out simultaneous raids across the country, detaining more than 100 suspected Islamic State members. Officials said those suspects were allegedly planning attacks aimed at Christmas and New Year’s celebrations.

Authorities said investigations into the suspected plots remain ongoing.
