NLC Urges Nigerians to Reject “Distorted” Tax Laws, Demands Tax Justice

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Nigerians to reject any tax law it described as “distorted or falsified,” warning that such legislation erodes public trust and undermines economic fairness.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the call in his 2025 Christmas message, expressing concern over alleged distortions and forgery surrounding certain tax policies, which he said raise serious questions about credibility and transparency.

Ajaero stressed the need for tax justice, insisting that the burden of taxation should fall more on the wealthy, while regressive taxes that worsen hardship for ordinary citizens must be eliminated.

“Together, in this season and beyond, we must insist on tax justice where the rich pay their fair share and all forms of regressive taxation are removed,” he said.
“Any tax system that is mired in apparent distortion and outright forgery is unacceptable and should therefore be rejected by all. It is better to patiently craft a law that is broadly conceived and owned than rush into one filled with serious errors and outright political manipulations.”

He urged Nigerians to remain united in demanding equitable governance and reaffirmed the NLC’s readiness to mobilise workers against policies that deepen economic hardship.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating alleged discrepancies in the gazetted Tax Reform Acts has resolved to conclude its assignment and submit its report to the House as soon as possible.

The committee, chaired by Muktar Aliyu Betara (APC, Borno), held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, December 23, to deliberate on a matter of privilege raised at plenary over inconsistencies between the tax laws passed by the National Assembly and the versions subsequently gazetted.

Members of the panel agreed to fast-track the investigation in the interest of legislative integrity, due process, and the restoration of public confidence in the lawmaking process.
