APC Announces Defection of Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang from PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, during the party’s 14th National Caucus Meeting held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja. Addressing party leaders, Yilwatda said Mutfwang’s defection further consolidates the APC’s dominance in the North Central region, noting that the ruling party now controls all the states in the zone.

He described the development as a significant boost for the APC ahead of future political contests. Governor Mutfwang was elected on the PDP platform during the 2023 general elections, making him the latest high-profile figure to exit the main opposition party.

The caucus meeting was attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, leaders of the Senate and House of Representatives, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. APC governors, former governors, and other key stakeholders were also present, including six governors who recently defected from the PDP, highlighting the growing wave of defections into the ruling party.

During the meeting, Yilwatda also announced January 30, 2026, as the deadline for all APC members to complete their electronic membership registration. He said the exercise would improve transparency, data integrity, and internal democracy within the party.

According to him, training and pilot registrations have already been carried out at state, zonal, and local government levels. He urged party members to support the nationwide rollout.

“All members, old and new, are expected to register themselves and their supporters on the portal before January 30, 2026, in preparation for our upcoming congresses,” Yilwatda said.

The defection is expected to have major implications for Plateau State politics and further weaken the PDP, which has continued to lose prominent members amid internal crises. APC leaders have described the move as a vote of confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and the direction of the ruling party.
