The Catholic community in Oyo State is in mourning following the passing of the Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Oyo, Most Reverend Julius Babatunde Adelakun, who died on Friday at the age of 91.
The sad news was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Bishop of Oyo Diocese, Most Reverend Emmanuel Badejo, who described the late cleric as a devoted servant of God whose life of faith and humility inspired generations.
Bishop Badejo noted that the late Adelakun “lived a full and impactful life, shepherding the Diocese of Oyo with uncommon dedication and leaving behind a lasting legacy of service to God and humanity.”
Adelakun’s journey in the priesthood began when he was ordained in June 1965, before being consecrated as bishop in February 1973. He went on to lead the Diocese of Oyo for 36 years, until his retirement in November 2009.
Born on November 4, 1934, Bishop Adelakun was widely respected for his pastoral commitment, his promotion of education, and his contributions to the growth of the Catholic Church in southwestern Nigeria.
While funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, Bishop Badejo urged the faithful to keep the late bishop in their prayers, remembering him as a true shepherd who served with humility and compassion.
