Pardoned Jan. 6 Rioter Arrested After Alleged Death Threat Against House Leader Hakeem Jeffries

An upstate New York man pardoned by President Donald Trump for his actions during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol was arrested Saturday after allegedly sending texts threatening to kill House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), New York State Police said.

Christopher Moynihan, 34, of Clinton, was charged with making a terroristic threat, authorities said — the first arrest of a pardoned Capitol rioter in connection with alleged political violence following the 2021 siege.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators quoted messages purportedly sent by Moynihan on Oct. 17 to an unidentified recipient. One alleged message read: “Hakeem Jeffries makes a speech in a few days in NYC I cannot allow this terrorist to live,” and another, “Even if I am hated he must be eliminated … I will kill him for the future.” The complaint states the texts “placed the recipient in reasonable fear of the imminent murder and assassination of Hakeem Jeffries by the defendant.”

Moynihan appeared in Town of Clinton Court and was remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center on $10,000 cash bail, police said. He is scheduled for an initial appearance in Dutchess County State Supreme Court on Thursday. It was not immediately clear whether he had retained an attorney.

Moynihan was previously convicted in 2022 of obstructing an official proceeding after breaching a security perimeter and entering the Capitol on Jan. 6; he was later granted a presidential pardon.

Representative Jeffries issued a statement thanking state and federal law enforcement “for their swift and decisive action to apprehend a dangerous individual who made a credible death threat against me with every intention to carry it out,” according to police.

State police said the investigation remains active as authorities continue to sift evidence in the case.
