A magistrate court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lawyers representing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Ejimakor was arrested by police on Monday after joining protesters demanding Kanu’s release. The IPOB leader has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in 2021.
Ejimakor and 12 others were charged with offences including criminal conspiracy, disobedience of a lawful order, inciting disturbance, and disturbance of public peace, contrary to Sections 152, 114, and 113 of the Penal Code Law.
The defendants named in two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) include: Ejimakor, Emmanuel Kanu, Joshua Emmanuel, Wilson Anyalewechi, Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, Clinton Chimeneze, Gabriel Joshua, Isiaka Husseini, Onyekachi Ferdinand, Amadi Prince, Edison Ojisom, Godwill Obioma, and Chima Onuchukwu.
According to the police, the suspects were arrested at different locations within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for allegedly engaging in acts that disrupted public peace.
Part of the FIR reads:
“That on the 20th day of October, 2025, you (1) Barrister Aloy Ejimakor … were arrested by a team of security agents in different locations within the FCT while involving yourselves in inciting disturbance and breach of public peace in disobedience to a court order, denying other citizens freedom of movement, disrupting free flow of traffic while chanting war songs and calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who is undergoing lawful trial at the Federal High Court, in a manner that threatens national security.”
The second charge states that Chima Onuchukwu was arrested near Gate 8, Aso Villa, for carrying placards inscribed “Free Nnamdi Kanu” and engaging in acts deemed to breach public peace and disobey a court order.
The defendants were brought before the Kuje Magistrate Court, but their arraignment was stalled after they requested time to meet their lawyers. The magistrate later ordered that they be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to October 24 for arraignment.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ejimakor wrote:
“I am safe & sound but still under custody at Kuje prison. The magistrate refused to listen to our submissions. He insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way. For context: keep in mind that they bypassed several Magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje.”
Meanwhile, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has called for disciplinary action against Ejimakor for alleged professional misconduct.
