Nigeria’s Christian community is in mourning following the death of renowned preacher and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Dr. Uma Ukpai. The revered clergyman passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80.
Born in Asaga, Ohafia, Abia State, Dr. Ukpai rose from humble beginnings to become one of Nigeria’s most influential Pentecostal leaders. For decades, his powerful sermons, revival crusades, and evangelical missions inspired millions across Africa and beyond.
A statement from his family described him as a spiritual general, a mentor, and a loving husband and father who dedicated his life to preaching the gospel and uplifting humanity.
“With hearts full of gratitude, we celebrate the triumphant home-going of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai… He was a spiritual general known for evangelism, a founding father of faith, a loving husband, devoted father, and mentor to many.
“While we mourn his physical absence, we rejoice that he has finished his race and is now resting in eternal praise.” the family said. Burial details are expected to be announced later.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a tribute from Abuja, described the late evangelist as one of God’s generals whose ministry brought revival, peace, and humanitarian service to Nigeria. The President recalled Ukpai’s legendary crusades such as the Greater Ibadan for Christ in 1982 and the Greater Lagos for Christ in 1985, calling them phenomenal events that sparked waves of spiritual renewal across the nation.
Tinubu said Dr. Ukpai lived a life of purpose, uniting Christians across denominations while championing peace and charity. He praised the evangelist’s commitment to building schools, hospitals, and foundations for the less privileged. “Dr. Ukpai has fulfilled his divine mission and has gone to be with the Lord. He fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith,” the President stated, while offering condolences to the Ukpai family and the entire Christian community.
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, also paid tribute to the late preacher. Its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described Ukpai as a servant of God who devoted his life to the gospel and the salvation of souls. He said the preacher’s passion for evangelism and acts of charity left an indelible mark on the Christian faith in Nigeria. “His message of hope, healing, and faith in Christ will continue to inspire generations,” he said.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State described Ukpai’s death as a monumental loss to the church and the nation. In a statement by his press secretary, Christian Aburime, the governor said the evangelist was a voice of righteousness whose work shaped modern Christianity in Nigeria.
“Rev. Dr. Ukpai was not just a preacher; he was a pivotal institution in Christian evangelism, national uprightness, and the Nigerian Pentecostal movement.
“For decades, his powerful voice echoed across continents, bringing salvation, healing, and hope to millions of people.
“The story of modern Christianity in Nigeria and across Africa cannot be complete without the indelible impact of Rev. Ukpai, through his crusades, theological teachings and establishment of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association dedicated to winning souls for Christ.”
Dr. Uma Ukpai, remembered for his fiery preaching and unwavering faith, leaves behind his wife, Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, their children, and countless followers across the world.
