Wike Flags Off Hybrid Solar Streetlight Project to ‘Light Up Abuja’

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched Lots 1 and 2 of the Light Up Abuja project, aimed at deploying integrated hybrid solar streetlights across major districts and expressways.

Speaking at the flag-off on Thursday, Wike said the initiative would enhance security, deter crime, and beautify the capital ahead of its 50th anniversary in February 2026.

“The Light Up Abuja project will dramatically transform the city within the next seven months. Visitors will not only see good roads but also a fully lit city,” the minister said.

He explained that the hybrid solar-powered system comes with surveillance features to curb vandalism, stressing that nearly 80 percent of Abuja remains in darkness at night, fueling insecurity. Wike accused previous administrations of awarding wasteful maintenance contracts to political contractors, with little to show for the huge sums spent.

The minister disclosed that the project follows investment deals secured during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2024 trip to Beijing, which brought in partnerships with China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC) and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The firms are contracted to install and maintain the streetlights for up to five years, ending the cycle of costly short-term maintenance.

Acknowledging potential resistance from ex-contractors, saboteurs, and corrupt officials who profited from darkness, Wike vowed to deliver the project.

“I am undeterred by any sentiments or political campaigns. This work must be done, and I will do it with the support of Mr President,” he declared.
