Tinubu to Address UN General Assembly on September 24

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to address the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday, September 24.

According to a revised provisional list of speakers, Tinubu will speak on the second day of the high-level general debate during the afternoon session, around 8:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. Nigerian time). He is listed as the 17th speaker of the day.

This year’s debate will draw 195 world leaders, including 98 heads of state, five vice-presidents, 44 heads of government, four deputy prime ministers, 37 ministers, one crown prince, and four delegation chairs.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will open the debate, followed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

UN sources, however, noted that the list could still change, and Tinubu’s slot may be reassigned if he does not attend the session in person.

In 2024, Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu at UNGA, delivering Nigeria’s address on the first day of the general debate in what diplomats described as a rare privilege.

The 80th session, themed “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights,” opened on September 9 with Germany’s Annalena Baerbock inaugurated as President of the General Assembly. Baerbock, a former foreign minister, is the fifth woman to hold the position.

The UNGA high-level week will run from September 22 to 30, featuring events such as the UN’s 80th anniversary commemoration, the SDG Moment, a climate summit, and the launch of a global dialogue on AI governance.
