FG Sets Up National Renewable Energy Committee

The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with key partners to establish the National Committee on Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, Innovation and Certification (NCREEIC), a body expected to drive Nigeria’s energy transition and advance sustainable development.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Geoffrey Nnaji, said the initiative reflects government’s resolve to provide Nigerians with clean, reliable, and affordable energy while promoting innovation, industrial growth, job creation, and environmental protection.

“Our vision is simple but powerful: to provide every Nigerian with clean, reliable, and affordable energy, while at the same time driving innovation, industrial growth, job creation, and environmental stewardship,” Nnaji stated.

He explained that the NCREEIC would focus on four key areas: innovation and research, collaboration, local content development, and certification and standards. The committee, he added, will operate through an inter-ministerial framework that brings together government agencies, the private sector, and civil society.

The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, described energy efficiency as a crucial pillar of the country’s energy transition agenda. He noted that the ECN, which the UN Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) has designated as Nigeria’s nodal agency, is also coordinating the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Bill awaiting presentation at the National Assembly.

Abdullahi said the committee would consolidate ongoing initiatives and fast-track progress towards sustainable energy and climate goals. “ECN has spearheaded several energy efficiency initiatives, including research, appliance testing, awareness campaigns and audits for public buildings,” he added.

National Coordinator of the Committee, Chijioke Nwadavid, pledged to strengthen collaboration across sectors and ensure impactful results. “This is a transformational step in Nigeria’s pursuit of energy sustainability and innovation-driven economic growth. With this Committee, we will foster collaboration, accelerate renewable energy deployment across the federation, and ensure our initiatives are grounded in transparency and impact,” he said.
