The Obidient Movement has issued a stern warning to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, following his controversial remarks about the visit of Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the state. The movement stated unequivocally that Governor Okpebholo should be held accountable should anything happen to Obi.
In a strongly worded statement signed on Saturday by its spokesperson, Aisha Kazaure, the movement described the governor’s comments as a reckless affront to Nigeria’s constitutional values. Citing Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution, the group affirmed that every Nigerian has the right to move freely and reside in any part of the country without hindrance.
“It is therefore disturbing and constitutionally indefensible for Governor Okpebholo to threaten or seek to restrict this fundamental right,” the statement read.
The outrage stems from a viral video showing Governor Okpebholo expressing displeasure over Obi’s recent visit to Edo State, reportedly without prior notification to the government. In the footage, Okpebholo was heard warning that Obi’s security “would not be guaranteed” should he visit again without seeking clearance a comment many have interpreted as a threat.
The Obidient Movement condemned the remarks as “irresponsible” and “a direct threat” coming from the chief security officer of the state. The group further recalled a similar statement made by Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, warning that such comments may reflect a growing trend of hostility toward Obi.
“This is not an isolated incident. We recall a similar threat previously issued by the Governor of Benue State against the person of His Excellency Mr. Obi,” the statement noted.
The group defended Obi’s interstate engagements as charitable and humanitarian, often providing support in areas neglected by state governments. They insisted that the former presidential candidate’s visits have been peaceful and impactful, and any attempt to politicise them is misplaced.
“Should anything untoward happen to His Excellency Peter Obi, Nigerians should know where to look,” the movement warned.
The group called on Nigerians to reject threats, division, and unlawful rhetoric, urging political leaders to uphold unity and respect constitutional rights.
“No individual, no matter how highly placed, should attempt to fan the embers of division or incite violence with careless, unlawful rhetoric,” the statement concluded.
