Atiku Condemns Benue Killings, Urges Nigerians to Hold Leaders Accountable

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has strongly condemned the recent deadly attack in Yelwata, Benue State, which reportedly claimed over 100 lives.

In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday night, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the incident and described it as a reflection of Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation.

“I am deeply anguished and shocked by the devastating news of the fresh attacks in Benue State, where over 100 innocent lives are feared lost. These killings, once again targeting defenceless communities, underscore the escalating insecurity crisis facing our nation,” he said.

Atiku said the pain endured by those orphaned, widowed, or displaced by the attackers defies expression, calling for urgent and comprehensive action to address the recurring violence.

He urged both the Federal Government and the Benue State authorities to immediately launch a transparent and thorough investigation, identify the perpetrators, and bring them to justice.

“Enhance security presence in the region, deploying necessary resources, personnel, equipment, and intelligence to guarantee the protection of vulnerable rural areas,” he advised.

Atiku also emphasized the need to engage local communities through dialogue, traditional leadership, and civil society groups to rebuild trust and promote resilience. He called for swift implementation of compensation, trauma counselling, medical support, and livelihood restoration for survivors and grieving families.

Describing the attack as a national emergency, Atiku called on Nigerians across religious and ethnic lines to unite in condemnation of the violence.

“We must hold our leaders accountable and insist on sustainable solutions to the violent tragedies claiming lives across the country,” he stated. “May God comfort the grieving families, heal our nation, and help us reclaim peace and security for all.”
