A Wisconsin judge has been arrested by federal authorities over allegations that she attempted to assist an undocumented immigrant in evading arrest during a court hearing.
Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan was taken into custody Friday morning by the U.S. Marshals Service, the agency confirmed to CBS News.
The arrest relates to an incident during an April 18 court appearance involving Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican national facing three misdemeanor battery charges stemming from a physical altercation. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were reportedly present at the courthouse to detain Flores-Ruiz.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Judge Dugan allegedly directed Flores-Ruiz and his attorney toward a side exit from the courtroom, potentially helping him avoid confrontation with ICE agents.
An X (formerly Twitter) post from FBI Director Kash Patel briefly appeared and was quickly deleted, alleging that Judge Dugan “knowingly allowed” Flores-Ruiz to evade federal custody. Despite the incident, Flores-Ruiz was later apprehended and did appear for his scheduled court hearing.
Judge Dugan’s arrest has sparked a growing controversy over the intersection of local court authority and federal immigration enforcement, with more details expected to emerge as the case unfolds.
