In a show of Nigerian influence abroad, four Nigerians Dr. Oye Owolewa, Segun Adeyina, Adeyemi Mobolade, and Chiaka Barry have recently secured prominent elected positions in the United States and Australia. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, spokesperson for the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), made the announcement on Sunday, celebrating their achievements in representing Nigerian excellence on the global stage.
In Washington, D.C., Dr. Oye Owolewa was re-elected as Shadow Representative under the Democratic Party, where he continues to champion local governance issues and advocate for the District’s statehood.
Georgia State Representative Segun Adeyina also retained his seat in District 110. An IT professional with expertise in program management for firms like General Motors and Hewlett Packard, Adeyina has contributed extensively to community development in Georgia.
In a historic win, Nigerian-American Adeyemi Mobolade became the first Black mayor of Colorado Springs, Colorado. His election is seen as a landmark, reflecting a shift in the city’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, Chiaka Barry made history in Australia, securing a seat in the Legislative Assembly of the Australian Capital Territory, representing the Ginninderra District under the Liberal Party. Barry, a legal expert in policy and legislative drafting, has a career rooted in community service.
NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa congratulated the new officeholders, hailing their achievements as groundbreaking and a source of pride for Nigerians worldwide.
