Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, asserting that he has lost political relevance. Wike’s comments came in response to a statement by Atiku, who had commended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his commitment to the people following the local government elections.
In a post shared on X, Atiku had praised the peaceful conclusion of the elections, stating that it marked the end of political intimidation in the state and allowed for governance to commence. He lauded the people of Rivers for rejecting political oppression and standing firm for democracy.
Wike, while speaking at a luncheon honoring the 10th Rivers State Assembly on Saturday, took a swipe at Atiku, arguing that the former Vice President had been rejected by Nigerians, citing his multiple unsuccessful presidential bids. “We never contested the local government elections. Did we pick forms?” Wike said, referring to Atiku’s claim about rejection. “You that contested and failed woefully, Nigerians have rejected you, so pack up and go home.”
Wike and Atiku had both sought the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket for the 2023 elections, but after Atiku secured the nomination and overlooked Wike as a potential running mate, their relationship soured. Wike eventually aligned with President Bola Tinubu, Atiku’s main rival, and was later appointed FCT minister by Tinubu.
