Jonathan Urges Political Actors in Rivers State to Prioritize Democracy Amid Election Tensions

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for calm and urged political leaders in Rivers State to prioritize democracy over personal interests in light of the ongoing controversies surrounding the local government elections.

His statement comes in response to accusations of political interference by state institutions and reports of electoral violence. The local government elections in Rivers State have been marked by tension, particularly between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Wike’s faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has boycotted the elections, citing unfavorable court rulings against the electoral process. Allegations have emerged suggesting that Wike’s group, along with state institutions, sought to undermine the grassroots elections.

In his statement, Jonathan stressed the importance of restraint and highlighted how crucial elections are in reinforcing citizens’ trust in democracy. He called on state institutions, especially security agencies, to refrain from actions that could lead to disorder. Jonathan’s statement includes the following points:

RIVERS CRISIS: A NOTE OF CAUTION

“I am aware that the local government election taking place in Rivers State today, October 5, has drawn significant interest from political actors. The recent political developments in the state are concerning for anyone committed to democracy and stability. “Elections form the bedrock of democracy, providing legitimacy to those in power. They empower citizens to voice their opinions in governance and help maintain faith in their nation.

“Every election, whether at the national or local level, is vital and serves as a testament to democratic values. It is the responsibility of all stakeholders, particularly state institutions, to foster a healthy democratic culture, with regular elections being a crucial component. “Our democracy is a collective asset, and its advancement relies on the government’s commitment to the rule of law, peace, and justice.

“I urge state institutions, particularly security agencies, to avoid actions that may lead to a breakdown of law and order. Given that Rivers State is a gateway to the Niger Delta, any unrest could have serious security implications for the entire region. “I also implore political actors to act with caution and patriotism in their pursuit of political ambitions. Furthermore, I appeal to the National Judicial Council (NJC) to address the rising number of conflicting court orders, which, if unaddressed, could undermine the judiciary’s credibility and weaken our democracy.

“The political situation in Rivers today reflects the crisis of the Old Western Region. We must not allow Rivers to become the catalyst for the collapse of our democracy. “State institutions, particularly the police and judiciary, along with other stakeholders, must prioritize public interest and work towards promoting the common good, which encompasses peace, justice, and equality.”

Jonathan’s comments emphasize the potential dangers posed by the current political tensions in Rivers State, warning that any further escalation could have significant consequences for both the state and the broader Niger Delta region.
