Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has made significant progress in addressing outstanding gratuities owed to retired state workers, settling a total of ₦9,357,743,281.35 in payments. The governor approved the payment of these backlogs in February this year, and so far, ₦4.86 billion has been paid to 2,666 state workers who retired between 2015 and 2024.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, an additional ₦4.49 billion has been paid to 3,840 local government workers and primary school teachers who retired between 2011 and 2021. This payment comes as part of the ₦5.69 billion owed to local government retirees. In total, the Zamfara State government has settled ₦9.35 billion of the ₦13.78 billion owed to 6,506 verified retirees, as part of Governor Lawal’s ongoing civil service reform.
