Pat Utomi Urges Focus on Values and Strong Institutions for Nigeria’s Progress

Professor of political economy, Pat Utomi, has called for leadership rooted in strong values and character to drive meaningful change in Nigeria. Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Utomi emphasized the importance of leaders committed to public service and ethical principles, noting that Nigeria has the human capital needed for success but lacks the institutional integrity to support it.

“Values shape human progress,” Utomi stated, urging that individuals with character in authority can turn the country around. He lamented the erosion of culture and values in Nigeria, particularly the weakening of institutions like the judiciary and the electoral body, which he said are essential for upholding the rule of law and promoting national progress.

“Our judiciary has become a laughing stock,” Utomi remarked, stressing that no country can thrive without reliable institutions. He also criticized nepotism, urging a shift towards competence-based leadership as key to Nigeria’s brighter future.
