President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun will serve his full four-year term, remaining in office until 2027. This confirmation aligns with the original terms of Egbetokun’s appointment and is not an extension, as clarified by a senior police source.
The source emphasized that Egbetokun’s tenure was specified in his appointment letter, and the recent announcement reaffirms this. In July, the National Assembly passed the Police Act Amendment Bill, which allows an IGP to serve the full term outlined in their appointment letter, even if they reach the mandatory retirement age or complete 35 years of service.
Egbetokun, appointed as IGP in June 2023, was initially set to retire in September 2024 upon turning 60. However, with this confirmation, he will continue to lead the police force until 2027, ensuring the completion of his term. This situation mirrors the experience of Egbetokun’s predecessor, Usman Baba, who also served beyond the typical retirement age until being replaced by Egbetokun in June 2023.
