The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) generated N1.42 billion in revenue from passengers in the first quarter of 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The NBS Rail Transportation Data for Q1 2024, released in Abuja on Monday, highlighted a significant 84.91% increase from the N768.44 million generated in the same period in 2023.
The report also revealed that revenue from goods and cargos in Q1 2024 amounted to N607.32 million, marking a 235.03% rise from the N181.27 million collected in Q1 2023. However, other receipts declined by 25.65%, from N34.17 million in Q1 2023 to N25.40 million in Q1 2024.
The number of rail transport passengers in Q1 2024 was reported at 675,293, up 52.88% from the 441,725 passengers recorded in Q1 2023. The volume of goods and cargo transported via rail in Q1 2024 was 160,650 tonnes, a significant increase from the 59,966 tonnes recorded in Q1 2023.
Additionally, the report noted that an extra 8,000 tonnes of goods and cargo were transported via pipeline, generating N59.14 million in revenue for Q1 2024.
