The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that it will not proceed with the strike action that was expected to start today to demand a new national minimum wage.
This decision was conveyed by NLC President Joe Ajaero during a press conference on Monday. Ajaero mentioned that the figures proposed by the Tripartite Committee are currently under review by President Bola Tinubu.
Ajaero clarified that the N62,000 proposed by the government does not indicate acceptance by the labour union as the new minimum wage. “We cannot declare a strike now because the figures are with the President. We will wait for the President’s decision,” he explained.
He also referenced the previous administration, noting that although the Tripartite Committee had proposed N27,000, the former president increased it to N30,000. “We are hopeful that this president will do the right thing,” Ajaero added.
