Governor Ademola Adeleke has secured a second term in office after defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the Osun State governorship election.

Adeleke, who contested on the platform of Accord, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday morning following an overnight collation of results in Osogbo, the state capital.

The state Returning Officer, Joshua Ogunwole, said Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to emerge victorious in the closely contested election.

Oyebamiji finished second with 444,815 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, came a distant third with 17,180 votes.

Adeleke won in 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11 LGAs.

The election was conducted amid heightened tension following violence and attacks reported in parts of the state in the days leading to the poll.

Despite the concerns, voter turnout was described as significant, with large numbers of voters overwhelming electoral officials at some polling units.

While reports of election-related violence were limited on Saturday, there were incidents involving the harassment of journalists and disruptions to voting.

Voting commenced early across most parts of the state, although technical glitches with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) caused delays at several polling units.

The election was also affected by documented cases of vote-buying and allegations of voter intimidation in some areas.
