“Iconic ‘All By Myself’ Songwriter Eric Carmen Passes Away at 74”

The renowned singer-songwriter Eric Carmen, celebrated for his hit song “All By Myself,” has passed away at the age of 74, as confirmed by his wife.

The American star initially gained prominence as part of the power pop group the Raspberries before establishing himself as a solo artist. One of his notable solo successes, “Hungry Eyes,” became a prominent feature in the 1987 cult movie classic “Dirty Dancing.”

Carmen’s wife, Amy, shared the news of his peaceful passing over the weekend in a statement posted on his official website. She expressed that it brought him immense joy to know that his music had resonated with so many over the decades, forming a lasting legacy.

Amy concluded the statement with a quote from Carmen’s 1977 solo album “Boats Against The Current,” stating, “Love is all that matters… faithful and forever.”

Born in Ohio, the singer co-founded the Raspberries in the early 1970s alongside Jim Bonfanti and Wally Bryson. Later, Dave Smalley joined the band after the departure of John Aleksic.

In 1972, they unveiled their debut album, “Raspberries,” with notable tracks like “Go All The Way” achieving chart success. The latter was later banned by the BBC in the UK due to sexually suggestive lyrics but gained a resurgence when included in the 2014 “Guardians Of The Galaxy” soundtrack.

Following four collaborative albums, the band disbanded in 1975, leading Carmen to embark on a solo career.

One of his most recognized solo tracks is “All By Myself,” a song that attained iconic status when covered by Canadian singer Celine Dion. The track also left an imprint in pop culture, featuring in the opening scene of “Bridget Jones’s Diary.”

Beyond his performing career, Carmen’s prowess as a songwriter resulted in hits such as “Almost Paradise” from the “Footloose” soundtrack, along with “Never Gonna Fall In Love Again” and “Make Me Lose Control.”
