The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said that the state will reform its transportation infrastructure in accordance with the Non-Motorised Transportation Plan as part of measures to lessen the impact of climate change.
This was said on Sunday at the first ever Car-Free Day in Ikeja, Lagos, by the governor, who was represented by the state commissioner for transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde.
Sanwo-Olu said that as transportation has been the main source of air pollution, the event provided a chance for the state to develop creative ways of carrying out the NMT plan.
He said, “This administration is making tremendous efforts to make transportation in the state more effective, efficient, and sustainable through several infrastructural, policy, and institutional reforms to curb the looming dangers of climate change.
“The infrastructure to support the NMT will be put in place to ensure seamless movement for the commuting public, and this decision is important because transportation is the biggest culprit of carbon emissions, which are affecting the environment negatively.
“Bicycle lanes will be created for cyclists on the road to encourage the use of bicycles, which will benefit the public, ensure pollution-free environments, road safety, and improved health for every individual, regardless of their age.’’
