Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police, ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel to schools, hospitals, and key national infrastructure nationwide on Sunday. The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the force’s public relations officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
In order to crack down on crime and criminality in various states of the federation, Mr. Baba also ordered routine patrols, stop-and-search operations, raids, and displays of force by tactical commanders.
He issued the order as he was examining the nation’s overall security condition from reports submitted by police commands and formations.
He called on strategic police managers at various levels to prioritise the use of intelligence gathering, particularly traditional and local intelligence to locate criminals’ hideouts and flush them out.
Mr. Baba urged all officers and men of the force to be on the offensive and to take the fight against crime to the doorposts of suspected criminals, including bushes and uncompleted buildings.
He called on the officers to profile suspects and charge those found wanting to courts accordingly.
He enjoined Nigerians to cooperate with the police as many police operatives would be seen at strategic areas, routes, and communities.
According to him, the purpose was to put a stop to the mischief and criminal behaviour of underworld people.
However, Mr. Baba cautioned police officers and men to act professionally, civilly, and humanely while performing their responsibilities.
By removing criminal elements that target hospitals, schools, and other vital national infrastructure, he vowed, the police will protect people’s lives and property.
