Ekiti Election Votes Sold As Low As N500 To Politicians – James

According to Paul James, an election monitor from YIAGA in Ekiti State, people sold their votes for as low as N500 during the state governorship election.

Speaking to the BBC Hausa Service on Saturday, James stated that money and other items were distributed to individuals during political events from March 2022 until the day.

According to him, the system has shifted since politicians are now going from house to house, giving money away.

According to the election monitor, vote-buying was not restricted to one political party, and it was so disappointing that they purchased people’s votes for as little as N500.

James said: “What this has shown is that politicians don’t like wasting time campaigning, what they now do is to buy people’s votes.”

Hajiya Zainab Aminu, an INEC employee, however, informed BBC Hausa that the issue had been addressed.

Aminu stated that individuals are not permitted to use their phones or take photographs while voting at polling sites.

People, she claims, used to take pictures of what they voted for and then exhibit them to receive money.
