2027: Obi, Kwankwaso Join NDC in Opposition Shift

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Musa Kwankwaso have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, marking a major shift in Nigeria’s opposition political landscape.

Both politicians received their NDC membership cards at a ceremony held after a closed-door meeting with party leaders, drawing loud cheers from supporters in attendance. They were officially welcomed into the party by former Bayelsa State Governor and NDC national leader, Seriake Dickson.

The development comes amid ongoing realignments within opposition circles as political actors reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Addressing party leaders and supporters, Obi urged the Federal Government not to interfere in the affairs of the new party, calling for a stable democratic environment free from political intimidation and litigation. He also appealed to members to avoid internal court disputes, stressing the need for unity and focus.

“We want a party that will rescue Nigeria… to ensure Nigerians can live without fear,” he said, adding that priority must be given to addressing insecurity, poverty, and governance challenges.

Obi added that his decision to join the NDC was not driven by personal grievances but by broader concerns about the country’s political direction, noting that recurring internal crises in previous platforms influenced his move.

Kwankwaso, in his remarks, called on Nigerians to immediately register with the NDC, stating that his political camp had already begun nationwide mobilisation and registration efforts.

Welcoming the new entrants, Dickson described the party as “fast-growing” and “stable,” insisting it is free from factional disputes and internal litigation.

“I welcome you to a party that is ready to box above its weight,” he said, expressing confidence that the NDC could emerge as a major force in Nigerian politics.

The defections underscore intensifying political repositioning among key figures ahead of 2027, as opposition leaders explore new platforms amid shifting alliances and internal tensions across the country.
