Zohran Mamdani Wins New York City Mayoral Race, Defeats Cuomo and Sliwa in Historic Victory

Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. The win marks one of the most significant political upsets in the city’s modern history.

At his jubilant victory celebration in Brooklyn, supporters erupted into cheers, hugging one another as campaign posters filled the air and Bad Bunny blasted through the speakers. One attendee waved the New York City flag high above the crowd.

“My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty,” Mamdani told the roaring audience. “I wish Andrew Cuomo the best in private life, but let tonight be the last time I speak his name. We are turning the page on a politics that abandoned the many and answered only to the few.”

Mamdani, 34, will become New York City’s first Muslim mayor, its first mayor of South Asian heritage, its first Africa-born mayor, and the youngest person to lead the city in more than 100 years when he takes office on Jan. 1.

He framed his victory as a mandate from working-class New Yorkers who feel left behind.

“New York, tonight you delivered a mandate for change,” he said. “Every morning, I will wake with one purpose: to make this city better for you than it was the day before.”

Voter turnout surged to historic levels. More than 2 million New Yorkers cast ballots — the highest participation in a mayoral race since 1969, according to the city’s Board of Elections.

Mamdani’s victory reshapes the political landscape of the nation’s largest city and reflects the rising influence of progressive candidates within the Democratic Party.
