National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared January 23 as “World Betrayal Day” following the resignation of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the party.
Governor Yusuf, who is reportedly set to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), announced his resignation from the NNPP on January 23, 2026, attributing his decision to deepening internal crises and persistent leadership disputes within the party.
Addressing his loyalists at his Miller Road residence in Kano, Kwankwaso said the idea of designating the date as World Betrayal Day was inspired by reactions from social media users who described the governor’s exit as an act of betrayal.
“None caught my attention more than one who posted, suggesting that we declare January 23 annually as World Betrayal Day,” Kwankwaso said.
“Therefore, as the leader and grand patron of this movement, I hereby declare that I fully support the declaration,” he added.
Kwankwaso further stated that the day would henceforth be marked with special events to remind party members of the circumstances surrounding Yusuf’s departure from the NNPP.
The governor’s defection has continued to stir mixed reactions across Kano State. While Yusuf’s supporters have described the move as a strategic political alignment with the Federal Government, Kwankwaso’s loyalists have condemned it as a betrayal that has deepened political uncertainty in the state.
APC supporters, on the other hand, have welcomed the development, describing it as a boost to the party’s dominance in Kano politics.
