Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned that his political career would face irreparable damage if Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara secures a second term.
Wike made the comments on Saturday during a meeting with stakeholders in Okrika Local Government Area, stressing that a firm decision had been taken regarding the 2027 governorship contest.
“We have made a decision as far as Tinubu is concerned. The other one — no way. Because if we make another mistake, then we will go and bury ourselves politically. I will not allow myself to be buried. I will not allow that mistake again. So everybody should know we have made a decision,” he said, without naming Fubara directly.
The FCT minister intensified his criticism following Fubara’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last month, accusing the governor of violating a prior peace agreement that facilitated his return to office. Wike vowed that any leadership mistakes in Rivers State would be corrected in 2027 and promised to reveal details of the agreement in due course.
At a separate meeting in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, Wike dismissed claims that Fubara’s support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would automatically secure his re-election. “If you played well with the first one and succeeded, do you think you can succeed with the second one? There cannot be two markets in one day,” he said, referencing prior arrangements.
He also questioned Fubara’s leadership style, noting, “Someone who cannot relate with the local government chairmen, state assembly members and national assembly members — what kind of leadership do you want to provide?”
Wike further claimed credit for Fubara’s rise to power, asserting, “I made him governor even when he was not popular among the people,” responding to Fubara’s New Year remarks dismissing his comments as “noise.”
The minister concluded by reiterating commitment to ensuring full support for Tinubu, stressing that past mistakes would not be repeated.
