Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reiterated his determination to dismantle shanties around Abuja, emphasizing that security concerns drive this initiative. During a visit to the Ruga community near Wuye, Wike stressed that no protests would deter his administration from ensuring Abuja remains safe by removing unauthorized structures that pose potential security threats.
To address residents’ concerns, Wike announced plans for dialogue with affected communities to establish sustainable solutions that prevent the re-emergence of illegal settlements. Responding to recent protests accusing the FCT Administration of “land grabbing,” he dismissed the allegations as misguided, stating that the government’s primary goal is security.
Wike called on Wuye shanty residents to select representatives for a meeting with the FCT Ministry to discuss assistance options. “Settlements close to critical infrastructure, like the rail line, create security vulnerabilities,” he remarked. “A responsible government cannot allow unchecked growth of unregulated communities that may shelter criminal activities.”
Abba Garu, a representative for the shanty residents, expressed their willingness to cooperate with the government, noting that their makeshift structures had already been demolished 22 times in the past. He thanked Wike for initiating discussions on possible support and pledged that residents would not attempt to rebuild in the area.
