IGP Bars Amotekun, Vigilante Corps from Ondo Election

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive preventing the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun) and Vigilante Corps from participating in the upcoming Ondo State governorship election on November 16. The decision, communicated through a statement by Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, aims to ensure security operations are strictly managed by the Nigeria Police Force.

Egbetokun outlined plans for a comprehensive security operation to safeguard all 18 Local Government Areas, 203 Wards, and 3,933 Polling Units in Ondo State during the election. The operation will involve specialized police units such as the Special Intervention Squad, Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Special Protection Unit, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, and K-9 Unit. Additional measures include aerial surveillance by police helicopters and the deployment of gunboats to secure waterways and riverine areas.

The IGP assured the public of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to conducting a transparent election, in full adherence to the Electoral Act of 2022. This will be achieved in collaboration with federal security agencies and members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.

Egbetokun also issued a stern warning to political thugs and others who may attempt to disrupt the election, emphasizing that they would face severe consequences if they threaten the peace and security of the process. Seventeen political parties will contest in the Ondo governorship election on November 16.
