The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate removal of Mr. Michael Ango, Acting Executive Chairman of the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS).
The announcement was made on Friday in a statement by Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, noting that the transition takes effect without delay. Wike instructed the most senior officer within the service to take over management pending further directives, with emphasis on ensuring uninterrupted revenue operations.
No official reason was provided for Ango’s removal. However, sources within the FCT Administration indicated that the minister has been implementing internal adjustments aimed at tightening revenue processes and boosting administrative efficiency across the territory. The action aligns with other reforms Wike has undertaken since assuming office, particularly in agencies handling financial operations and service delivery.
Ango, a native of Kebbi State, was appointed acting chairman of the FCT-IRS in August 2024, succeeding Haruna Abdullahi, who served in acting capacity for three years. During his tenure, he oversaw key revenue functions and implemented strategic initiatives to enhance revenue generation and fiscal sustainability. He holds an LLM from Columbia University School of Law, New York, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The FCT-IRS, established under the FCT Internal Revenue Service Act of 2015, is empowered to administer tax and non-tax revenues accruable to the Federal Capital Territory. It is responsible for collecting all taxes collectible by a state government under the Taxes and Levies (Approved List of Collection) Act of 1998 (as amended) and coordinating other revenues accruable to the FCT.
With Ango’s departure, attention now turns to the FCT Administration’s next steps in its ongoing reforms within the revenue service.
