Warren Pushes Back Against Trump Cuts to Education and Social Security, Launches Oversight Campaigns

As the Trump administration continues its push to trim federal spending by targeting key agencies like the Social Security Administration and the Department of Education, Senator Elizabeth Warren is leading a series of high-profile investigations aimed at shielding vulnerable Americans from losing access to retirement benefits and higher education.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Warren denounced the administration’s efforts as harmful overreach. “We cannot stand by and let Trump abuse his power by ripping away the programs that help people breathe a little easier,” the Massachusetts Democrat said. “People voted Democrats into office to fight for them, and they do not expect us to roll over and play dead.”

A longtime advocate for public education, Warren launched her Save Our Schools initiative earlier this year to probe attempts by the Trump administration to downsize or dismantle the Department of Education. The effort has focused on cuts to the Federal Student Aid (FSA) office and sweeping changes to the student loan system. Democrats argue that slashing FSA’s workforce will disproportionately impact low-income families and could jeopardize access to financial aid.

Warren is also taking aim at the Social Security Administration (SSA), which serves more than 70 million Americans. In April, she unveiled the Social Security War Room, a campaign designed to resist what she calls the administration’s “attack on Americans’ Social Security.” Her office says the effort has already yielded results, including reduced wait times at SSA offices and call centers.

The SSA has proposed cutting approximately 7,000 positions, a move that sparked widespread concern among Democratic lawmakers. Warren has called for an inspector general review of the agency’s leadership, singling out Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano and urging the administration’s Office of Government Efficiency to halt further layoffs.

“Hands off Social Security,” Warren said, warning that continued cuts would erode a crucial safety net for millions of retirees, people with disabilities, and surviving family members.

The Trump administration has defended the cost-cutting measures as necessary to eliminate waste and improve efficiency in federal operations. But Warren and other Democrats argue that these cuts risk undermining core government responsibilities that millions of Americans rely on every day.
