Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for stronger ties between Nigeria and the European Union, focusing on collaborative efforts to address malnutrition and other humanitarian issues.
During a courtesy visit by an EU delegation led by outgoing EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for the EU’s support and emphasized the importance of ongoing cooperation. He praised Ambassador Isopi for her significant contributions during her tenure.
“You have played a crucial role in strengthening EU-Nigeria relations,” Shettima said. “Your support in humanitarian efforts, particularly in the North East and North West, and in trade between our nations, has been invaluable.”
Highlighting Nigeria’s strategic importance, Shettima noted, “As Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria is set to become the third most populous nation globally by 2050. We value your commitment to critical programs in Nigeria.”
The Vice President also acknowledged Ambassador Isopi’s efforts in facilitating various humanitarian initiatives and political moments, including the transition process and the peace accord with political parties before the 2023 elections.
“We deeply value the EU’s ongoing engagement and support, particularly in addressing humanitarian crises and security challenges in the Northwest,” Shettima added.
Ambassador Isopi, reflecting on her three-year tenure, highlighted the progress made and the close collaboration with the Vice President’s office. She noted, “It’s been a privilege to work with you. Nigeria has seen significant development and improved infrastructure during this period.”
She emphasized the EU’s commitment to supporting peace, security, and economic development in Nigeria, particularly through new education programs and job creation in agriculture for youth in the Northwest.
Ambassador Isopi expressed optimism about the future of EU-Nigeria relations, stating, “We reaffirm our commitment to continued engagement and look forward to working with Nigeria’s next EU representative to further develop our partnership.” The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Head of the EU delegation, Zissimos Vergos, and the Political Adviser to the EU in Nigeria, Osaro Odewingie.
