LP Speaks On Grounded Plane By “Powers That Be,”
The Labour Party (LP) has condemned the Federal Government’s alleged grounding of the party’s campaign plane in Lagos.
Loyalist of the LP Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and some party leaders were restricted from boarding the plane to their rally in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital.
Diran Onifade, Head of Media for the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organisation, said in a statement on Wednesday that the plane was grounded at the Lagos airport by the “powers that be,” citing “regulatory reasons.”
In response to the development, LP National Chairman Julius Abure confirmed that the grounded plane was intended to convey members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) to the Ibadan rally.
Abure, however, said the party was not worried by the grounded plane, stressing that the “powers that be” have been using every opportunity to frustrate its campaign activities.
In an interview with The Punch on Wednesday night, he said, “We have just finished our rally in Ibadan. It is true that the plane meant to convey our NWC and NEC members for the campaign was grounded by the powers that be. But we were not deterred by the plane that was grounded.
“This is what we have been saying about this country. It is not the first time it is happening. They have been using every opportunity to ensure we don’t get to do anything in this country.”
Meanwhile the Federal Government has denied media reports that the Labour Party‘s campaign plane was grounded.
Reacting to the development, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) denied the allegations that the LP’s campaign plane was grounded to frustrate the party’s campaign.
In a statement on Wednesday, the authority explained that the plane belonged to a scheduled operator also known as a commercial flight operator.
The NCAA said the flight crew of the aircraft returned to the base on their own to check on a mechanical issue that developed soon after it took off.
It said the safety precautionary flight measures were taken by the flight operator, and not by the NCAA, saying that the authority was not involved in the decision.
It said, “The so-called grounded plane belongs to a scheduled operator i.e. normal commercial flight. The flight crew of the said aircraft returned to the base on their own to check on an issue that developed soon after it took off.
“This is the normal and right thing to do. What they did is what we termed safety precautionary flight measures. NCAA was not involved in this decision.”
