Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Canadian Goods Over Potential China Trade Deal

President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to impose a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States if Canada moves forward with a trade agreement with China.

“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.

Trump did not specify which agreement he was referencing. However, Canada and China reached a deal last week under which Canada would reduce its 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for lower Chinese tariffs on Canadian agricultural products.

Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc responded in a statement, saying there is “no pursuit of a free trade agreement with China,” and emphasizing Canada’s close economic relationship with the United States.

“The new Government of Canada is strengthening the Canadian economy through a plan that consolidates our national strength and bolsters our trade partnerships around the world,” LeBlanc said, while highlighting Canada’s “remarkable partnership” with the U.S.

The remarks mark Trump’s latest criticism of Canada and follow a social media post a day earlier in which he claimed Canada opposed his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense project and attacked Ottawa’s trade discussions with Beijing.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pushed back on Trump’s comments Thursday, stressing Canada’s independence while reaffirming bilateral ties.

“Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership in the economy, in security, and in cultural exchange,” Carney said. “But Canada doesn’t exist because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”

Trump had taken a different tone last week when asked about Canada’s outreach to China during Carney’s visit. At the time, he said he had no objection to Canada pursuing a deal with Beijing.

“If you can get a deal with China, you should do that,” Trump said. “That’s a good thing.”
