Trump Renews Push to End New York City’s Congestion Pricing Program

President Donald Trump said Monday he will make another attempt to shut down New York City’s congestion pricing program, reigniting a long-running dispute over the controversial tolling system designed to ease traffic and reduce emissions in Manhattan.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had directed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to take “a good, long look at terminating” the plan, which charges drivers entering Manhattan’s central business district during peak hours.

Trump claimed the tolls have “turned the city into a ghost town,” adding that he intends to “put an end to this disastrous policy once and for all.”

The president has repeatedly opposed congestion pricing, declaring it “dead” earlier this year, though the city, state, and Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) have resisted his previous efforts to block the initiative.

The program — the first of its kind in the United States — officially launched earlier this year after years of planning and federal environmental review. Proponents argue it will reduce gridlock, lower pollution, and raise billions for public transit improvements.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul fired back at Trump’s latest comments, vowing to defend the policy in court if necessary.

“The Trump administration tried once before to kill congestion pricing and lost,” Hochul said in a statement. “If they want to try again, we’ll see them in court. The cameras are staying on.”

The White House has not yet indicated whether the Transportation Department will move to suspend or revoke federal approvals tied to the program.
