Trump Grants Major Tariff Exemptions on Tech Imports, Easing Pressure on U.S. Industry

President Donald Trump has announced broad exemptions from his administration’s steep import tariffs on electronic devices, offering a significant reprieve to U.S. tech companies amid rising concerns over the economic impact of the trade war with China.

The exemptions, which take effect retroactively from April 5, apply to a range of electronics—including smartphones, laptops, and semiconductors—that had been subject to both a 10% global import tariff and the 125% “reciprocal” tariff on Chinese goods.

The move marks the first major rollback in Trump’s aggressive tariff campaign targeting Beijing, following weeks of escalating tit-for-tat trade measures, including a 145% U.S. tariff on select Chinese products and an 84% retaliatory tariff from China.

“We’re going to be very specific,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Miami. “But we’re taking in a lot of money. As a country, we’re taking in a lot of money.”

The decision comes after intense lobbying from major U.S. tech firms such as Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia, who warned that the tariffs could drastically increase costs due to their reliance on Chinese manufacturing.

Dan Ives, head of global tech research at Wedbush Securities, called the exemption “a game-changer,” particularly for companies heavily dependent on chip production and Chinese supply chains.

Apple, which manufactures roughly 80% of its U.S.-bound iPhones in China, had been accelerating efforts to shift production to India, while other tech firms like Samsung have expanded operations in Vietnam in response to mounting trade pressures.

The White House said the tariff relief is intended as a temporary measure to give American tech companies time to diversify and restructure their global supply chains.

Industry leaders have cautiously welcomed the move, though uncertainty remains about whether further exemptions or new tariffs may be introduced in the coming months.
