Trump Defends First 100 Days, Signals Tougher Stance on Putin and Touts Economic, Immigration Wins

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, President Donald Trump reflected on his first 100 days in office, addressing a range of topics including the economy, immigration, executive power, and foreign policy—while defending his administration’s most controversial policies and taking aim at both allies and adversaries.

Speaking with ABC News anchor and Senior National Correspondent Terry Moran from the Oval Office, Trump touted what he called early wins on inflation and border security, while delivering pointed criticism of former President Joe Biden and offering praise for current officials like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk.

Tariffs and the Economy: “They Did Sign Up For It”

When asked about public anxiety over rising prices and trade tariffs, Trump maintained that Americans supported his hardline trade policies from the outset.

“Well, they did sign up for it, actually,” Trump said. “This is what I campaigned on… We’ve been abused by other countries at levels nobody’s ever seen before.”

Trump took credit for falling prices on gasoline and groceries, singling out eggs as an example. “Eggs are down 87% since I got involved,” he claimed, adding, “There were plenty of eggs for Easter.”

Immigration: “We Are Careful”

Trump also defended his immigration policies, claiming his administration is “careful” despite public concern over wrongful deportations. When pressed about due process, Trump acknowledged the need for caution, referencing supporter Joe Rogan’s warning that the U.S. must avoid becoming “monsters while fighting monsters.”

“Oh, I agree with that a hundred percent,” Trump said. “We want to be careful. We are careful. We’re doing something that has to be done.”

Executive Power: “Making America Great Again”

Trump rejected suggestions that he was overreaching presidential authority. “No, I would hate them to think that,” he told Moran. “I’m doing one thing: I’m making America great again… We had a leader that was grossly incompetent. He should have never been there.”

Russia and Ukraine: “Putin May Be Tapping Me Along”

Trump raised doubts about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intentions in Ukraine, suggesting in a recent social media post that Putin may be dragging out peace talks. “It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along,” Trump wrote, proposing tougher responses such as banking restrictions or secondary sanctions.

The wide-ranging interview marks Trump’s most detailed public assessment of his early presidency, and underscores the confrontational tone and sweeping ambition that have defined his return to office.
