Trump and White House Distance Themselves From Early Claims After Fatal Minneapolis Shooting

President Donald Trump and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt are stepping back from inflammatory statements made by senior administration officials following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis.

In the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s incident, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller publicly labeled Pretti — an ICU nurse — a domestic terrorist without providing evidence.

During Monday’s press briefing, News Men asked Leavitt whether the president agreed with those characterizations.

“I have not heard the president characterize Mr. Pretti in that way,” Leavitt said. “However, I have heard the president say he wants to let the facts in the investigation lead itself.”

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Sunday, Trump declined to say whether the federal agents involved in the shooting acted appropriately, stating that his administration was “reviewing everything and will come out with a determination.”

Leavitt told reporters that the shooting is under investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI. She added that Customs and Border Protection is also conducting an internal review.

Meanwhile, Trump announced Monday that he is sending Border Czar Tom Homan to Minnesota to take direct oversight of federal immigration enforcement operations — bypassing the usual chain of command in which Homeland Security Secretary Noem and Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino had been managing ICE activity.

“He has not been involved in that area, but knows and likes many of the people there. Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me,” Trump wrote in a social media post.

The leadership shift comes as political and public scrutiny intensifies over federal enforcement tactics in Minneapolis following Pretti’s death.
